Newcomer Youth Programs

Providing ways to make friends and connect with the community.

For youth new to Canada, fear and loneliness are everyday feelings. Feeling like you belong takes time. People have to experience different situations and make their own connections. Newcomer Youth programming empowers youth who have recently arrived in Canada with the knowledge and tools to successfully integrate and settle into Canadian society.

Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW Program)

New sessions to be announced.

Since 2009, the NOW program has been offered during the last two weeks of summer. This program supports newcomer students that have not yet been in high school (grades 9 to 12) in Canada. NOW provides an orientation to school, tips for success, and an opportunity to make new friends.

The following schools are involved in the NOW program:

  • Waterloo Region District School Board: Waterloo CI, Eastwood CI, Galt CI, and Forest Heights.

  • Waterloo Catholic District School Board: St. Mary's High School & Resurrection High School.

Newcomer Youth Program

Sessions are on-going.

Being a youth is hard. It’s even harder when everything is NEW. That’s where the YMCA can help. Our Newcomer Youth program helps participants break down cultural barriers, practice English, and make new friends. You will gain knowledge and tools to successfully integrate and settle into Canadian society.
