Digital Literacy Program

Starting life in a new country comes with many opportunities, but it can also present challenges, especially in a world where technology plays an essential role in daily life. The YMCA of Three Rivers' Digital Literacy Program (Language Stream), proudly funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, was designed to help newcomer communities build the digital skills and confidence needed to thrive in Canada.
Beyond technical skills, the program created a welcoming learning environment where participants could connect with others, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding of the resources and opportunities available in their new community.
The accompanying impact video shares the voices and experiences of program participants in the Arabic cohort as they reflect on their learning journey. Their stories highlight the meaningful impact that access to digital literacy training can have on newcomers as they build new lives, pursue opportunities, and strengthen their connection to the community.
The Digital Literacy Program demonstrates how language-accessible learning and community support can empower newcomers with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
Delivered in participants' first languages, including Arabic, Tigrinya, and Rohingya, the program provided beginner-friendly instruction in essential digital skills. Participants learned how to use computers, navigate the internet safely, access online services, create documents, manage email accounts, complete online forms, and use digital tools commonly required for employment, education, and everyday life.
