Y Story: Inclusion Support at Camp

As a mom of a child with special needs, one of my greatest hopes is for my son to enjoy as many “typical” childhood experiences as possible. When I was younger, I had the chance to go to summer camp at the Y.M.C.A., and those memories have always stayed with me. I can’t express how much it meant to see my own child have that same opportunity this summer at Camp Wildwood with the incredible support of an Inclusion Counsellor.

Even before camp began, the thoughtful touch of sending Max an email with information and a photo of his counsellor, Kate, helped ease his anxiety. He was so excited to meet her, and the moment we arrived, any remaining nerves disappeared. Kate came right up to Max and immediately connected with him over the Sonic image on his t-shirt. From that moment on, he was completely engaged.

Max loves the outdoors, and we knew Camp Wildwood would be a perfect fit. Still, I had some worries as a parent. But from the very first day, it was clear that he was in the best hands. The entire team was welcoming and kind, and Kate’s warmth, energy, and understanding made a world of difference. She supported him with such care through moments of emotional dysregulation, sensory overload, and social challenges and helped him thrive.

Each day, Max came home tired but full of excitement and joy. On a rainy day, I worried the change in routine might be difficult for him, but it ended up being his favourite day of the week! The staff had so many engaging, creative activities ready, no matter the weather. I never once feared I’d get a call saying camp was too much for him. The support he received allowed him to shine, and his behaviour reflected just how comfortable and confident he felt.

Kate was truly exceptional - not only as a counsellor, but as a person. Her passion for working with children with autism is so evident, and it gives me hope to know she is pursuing a career supporting kids like Max in the future. At the end of the week, Max even asked if Kate could come over for a playdate (proof of just how much she meant to him!)

It was also incredibly heartwarming to see how all the counsellors knew Max and embraced him with genuine affection. He felt so seen, included, and valued, and he loved each and every one of them right back. We are so grateful for this experience, and we were so moved by how positive it was that we signed up for another week.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for creating such a safe, inclusive, and joyful environment for Max. You didn’t just give him a great week, you gave him a summer he’ll never forget.
