HOW
The expansion is part of the Investing in Canada’s Infrastructure Program, a collaborative effort between the Federal and Provincial governments, along with contributions from the YMCA, bringing the total project budget to $1,150,000.
A key focus of our grant application was enhancing access and programs for older adults. With the improvements to our existing fitness center, we aim to increase visits from older adults and provide more opportunities for them to engage in wellness activities. The expanded space will allow us to offer additional programs, such as Move Together Strength, Chair Yoga classes, and health management initiatives at Stork.
WHEN & WHY
Construction will officially begin for this project beginning March 24. Please find a summary of the current phase and impacts below:
-
June 30 - July 18: The studio upstairs will be closed during this time while some upgrades and storage spaces are added. The wall between the two studio doors will be removed and pushed out into the fitness centre to add a storage closet inside the studio. All group fitness classes during this time will be moved to the MLR, gymnasium and MPR 1 & 2 and the Member Portal has been updated accordingly.
Our targeted completion date is October 2025 tentatively.

WHAT
Stork Family YMCA is expanding our second-floor space. We are building onto the existing area in order to expand our strength training, free weight and functional spaces.
Specifically, we are adding a second-floor addition above the MLR room, that will be a continuation of the existing fitness centre. It will be adding 4,500 square feet of space. A large portion of this grant funding was focused on the premise of increasing older adult accesses to our fitness centre. In order to achieve this goal, we are moving equipment out of our existing fitness centre into this new second floor space to open up the area closest to the elevator so we can help increase older adult access.
